Mathematics at Greenleaf
At Greenleaf Primary School, we believe that all children can succeed in mathematics. We aim to develop confident, curious and resilient mathematicians who enjoy learning, think deeply and can apply their understanding in a wide range of contexts.
Mathematics is a core part of our curriculum and plays a vital role in helping children make sense of the world around them. We want all pupils to leave Greenleaf with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.

Our Vision
Our mathematics curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice;
- develop a deep and connected understanding of mathematical concepts;
- reason mathematically by explaining, justifying and proving their thinking;
- solve problems using a range of strategies and approaches;
- become confident, independent learners who persevere when faced with challenge;
- develop a positive attitude towards mathematics and believe that everyone can achieve success through effort and determination.
These aims reflect the National Curriculum expectations and our commitment to providing a high-quality mathematics education for every child.
Teaching for Mastery
At Greenleaf, mathematics is taught using the principles of Teaching for Mastery, following guidance from the NCETM and White Rose Maths.
We believe that all children can achieve in mathematics and that learning should focus on developing deep understanding rather than simply moving quickly through content.
To support this, teachers:
- break learning into small, carefully sequenced steps;
- use concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract methods (CPA approach);
- encourage discussion, reasoning and mathematical explanation;
- revisit key concepts regularly to deepen understanding;
- provide challenge through depth rather than acceleration;
- ensure all pupils progress together while receiving appropriate support and scaffolding where needed.
Please see below our progression documents for each key mathematical area:
Number – Addition and Subtraction
Number – Multiplication and Division
Fraction (inc. Decimals and Percentages)
Geometry – Properties of Shape
Geometry – Position and Direction
Developing Mathematical Thinking
We place great importance on developing pupils' mathematical reasoning and executive function skills.
Children are encouraged to:
- explain and justify their answers;
- evaluate different methods and strategies;
- identify patterns, connections and relationships;
- reflect on mistakes and learn from them;
- develop working memory, flexible thinking and self-regulation;
- persevere when solving complex problems.
Through regular mathematical talk and collaborative learning, pupils become increasingly confident in communicating their ideas using precise mathematical language.
What Mathematics Looks Like at Greenleaf
Children regularly engage in:
- fluency practice to secure key number facts and calculation skills;
- reasoning activities that deepen conceptual understanding;
- problem-solving tasks that encourage resilience and creativity;
- use of manipulatives and visual representations;
- mathematical discussion and partner work;
- opportunities to apply mathematics across the curriculum and in real-life contexts.
Three times a week you will see separate fluency sessions happening tailored specifically to building the first two points mentioned above and their oracy skills.
Daily Maths lessons take place following the White Rose Maths scheme. Please see Maths overview document below for more information about units taught in each year group:

Our Expectations for Learners
By the end of Key Stage 2, we expect pupils to:

Enrichment Opportunities
We believe mathematics should be engaging, inspiring and enjoyable.
Pupils have opportunities to participate in:
- Times Table Rock Stars competitions and challenges;
- Maths and STEM Weeks;
- cross-curricular STEM learning;
- mathematical investigations and projects;
- assemblies and whole-school mathematics events.
These experiences help children develop confidence, enthusiasm and a lifelong appreciation of mathematics.

Supporting Learning at Home
We encourage families to support mathematical learning through:
- regular times tables practice (Times Table Rockstars);
- number fluency activities (Numbots);
- mathematical discussion in everyday situations;
- online learning platforms and homework activities;
- applying mathematics in real-life contexts such as shopping, cooking and telling the time.
Working together helps children build confidence and develop secure mathematical understanding. Please see your child’s individual homework menu for further information.
Annually, each year group holds a Maths Workshop to provide parents with in-depth information of what Maths looks like in their child’s year group. Strategies we teach the children are shown and steps on how to support them further at home are shared.
